Artoveli: My Dad and Blue Sky

In view of the amazing response we’re getting to my Dad’s “Blue Sky” audition, I feel like I should let you all in on the story of how he came to be involved! Just a short story, don’t worry:

My sister and I went over to our parents’ house Sunday to do laundry, and we told them all about the…

Can I just say how incredibly envious I am of how amazing your family sounds? Good lord. I haven’t been able to talk to my parents about this kind of stuff- ever.

I tried to put fanfic into context for my father a few years back when I was in the Sherlock Holmes fandom, considering that Sherlock Holmes is pretty much in the public domain, and people have been publishing what is essentially fanfic of his adventures (slash fans, look up ‘My Dearest Holmes’ on Amazon) and sending fanletters to 221B Baker Street since the series was thought up. And then there’s ridiculous things like Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, and The Eyre Affair. Fandom is crazy and amazing and irrepressible.

But even though I was trying to show my father something I’d kept hidden from him my entire life, he didn’t get it. Instead, he asked me why I wasn’t coming up with original things on my own (answer: Because if I waited around for the original ideas to come, I’d never have any). My mother tried to get me to copyright my fanart (lolwat?).

You’re so, so, so lucky to have your parents who’d read the fanfic you recommend, and have a father who is willing to be as silly as that for himself and others. You’re so lucky that you’re able to sit your parents down and have them appreciate a game as a work of art and not a waste of time. Please hug your dad for me, because that’s a precious, precious thing.

Here’s hoping he makes the audition!

He’s a treasure all right. :-)  But we’ve always loved this kind of thing, as a family.  Every year we all participate in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), and my Mom is actually the one who introduced us to the concept of fanfiction.

Thank you so much for the kind words!  I’ll be sure and pass your message along to him.
